Lesson 246: ”To love my Father is to love His Son.”

Reframe: To embody love for the Source is to honor all beings.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
One in the morning and one in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

I will accept the way You choose for me to come to You, my Father. ²For in that will I succeed, because it is Your Will.³And I would recognize that what You will is what I will as well, and only that. ⁴And so I choose to love Your Son.⁵Amen. (ACIM, W-246.2:1-5)

OR… “Choosing to love Source is also choosing to love one another.”

For Lessons 241-250What is the World? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
The world is false perception. ²It is born of error, and it has not left its source. … The world was made as an attack on God. ²It symbolizes fear. ³And what is fear except love’s absence? … ⁵Yet everything that they report is but illusion which is kept apart from truth. … As sight was made to lead away from truth, it can be redirected. ²Sounds become the call for God, and all perception can be given a new purpose by the One Whom God appointed Savior to the world [that’s us]. ³Follow His light…Hear His Voice…let Him give you peace and certainty…⁴We must save the world.

From the PART II IntroductionRead the whole introduction here.

Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

Traditional Christian religions would most likely define “His Son” as Jesus, making today’s lesson mean “To love God is to love Jesus.” The Course, however, defines “His Son” as our shared humanity—all created as God created us, all as One. So today’s lesson becomes “To love God is to love all of humanity.”

At this point in the Course, I understand this as one of its key principles, and one I find challenging to apply. That’s mainly because I’m filtering it through the fears and grievances of my ego mind. The Lesson states plainly that I can’t find my way to God if I have hatred in my heart.

When I remember to choose Divine mind over ego mind, I can feel in my soul how we are all one—united in peace, love, and joy, all of the Light. Today, in meditation, I took an inner journey to that soul level and imagined all of humanity at theirs. From that perspective, I could feel the unity and love. So I know it’s possible.

I test it by thinking of people who usually trigger my ego mind. I can maintain the positive feeling for a while, but then an ego-based thought pops in and breaks the spell. It’s just going to take more practice.

To clarify, by loving humanity, it doesn’t mean I condone the behavior of our ego minds. It means I see our ego minds in action and yet can still feel the love.

My takeaway: to love God/Father/Source/Universe, I need to choose to love humanity. I’m not totally there yet, but at least I understand the assignment. And it gets easier the more I practice.

“Lesson 246 reminds me of the real reason I want to forgive. Because I want to be happy.”
