Lesson 247: ”Without forgiveness I will still be blind.”

Reframe: Forgiveness opens my eyes to clarity and freedom.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

So would I look on everyone today. ²My brothers are Your Sons. ³Your Fatherhood created them, and gave them all to me as part of You, and my own Self as well. ⁴Today I honor You through them, and thus I hope this day to recognize my Self.(ACIM, W-247.2:1-4)

OR… “I see that I am one with the Universe and all of Its creations. We stand together as one Self.”

For Lessons 241-250What is the World? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
The world is false perception. ²It is born of error, and it has not left its source. … The world was made as an attack on God. ²It symbolizes fear. ³And what is fear except love’s absence? … ⁵Yet everything that they report is but illusion which is kept apart from truth. … As sight was made to lead away from truth, it can be redirected. ²Sounds become the call for God, and all perception can be given a new purpose by the One Whom God appointed Savior to the world [that’s us]. ³Follow His light…Hear His Voice…let Him give you peace and certainty…⁴We must save the world.

From the PART II IntroductionRead the whole introduction here.

Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

These opening lines from the Lesson stood out to me today:

³For forgiveness is the only means whereby [holy] vision comes to me. ⁴Let me accept what His sight shows me as the simple truth, and I am healed completely. ⁵Brother, come and let me look on you. ⁶Your loveliness reflects my own. ⁷Your sinlessness is mine. ⁸You stand forgiven, and I stand with you.” (ACIM, W-247.1:3-8)

Until we see each other for who we really are—Children of God, Source, whatever name works—our ego minds keep us blind to our own loveliness and sinlessness. Most of the time when a Lesson mentions forgiveness, I think of how I see others. But it’s just as important to see the Light in me as well. If I can do that, seeing it in others gets much easier.

Like yesterday’s Lesson, this takes practice to grasp at a deeper level. It’s easy with people I know and love. It’s harder with people I label as “sinners”—that’s the ego mind’s turf.

I took the practice to heart today and chose to see the light in everyone I met. We had workers coming by to do some housework, and I was nervous this morning because they were new to us. My ego went into hyperdrive: what if they do it wrong, damage something, try to scam us?

Remembering today’s Lesson, I at least brought my ego mind to neutral. When the men arrived, I silently told myself about them: I see the light in you. It was as if all my worries dropped—this was the healing the Lesson talks about. They were courteous, helpful, and finished ahead of schedule. In my mind, I told Juni—my name for my ego—“See? Nothing to worry about.” She went off in a snit. I was thrilled.

Does this mean we should be mindless in our dealings with others? No. There’s a difference between worry and planning. Worry breeds fear and anxiety—no peace there. Planning or preparation keeps a more peaceful approach: maintain your peace, see the light in others, and trust that whatever happens, you’ll handle it because you’re not alone and Divine resources are available.

For me, it comes down to this: if I want to see the simple truth, I allow myself to accept what Divine sight shows me. That’s what the Course means by forgiveness.

“Instead of focusing on “what I see,” I focus on “what I want.” Over and over and over again.”
