Lesson 254: ”Let every voice but God’s be still in me.”
Reframe: Let all distractions fall silent so I may hear truth and wisdom..
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Father, today I would but hear Your Voice. ²In deepest silence I would come to You, to hear Your Voice and to receive Your Word. ³I have no prayer but this: I come to You to ask You for the truth. ⁴And truth is but Your Will, which I would share with You today. (ACIM, W-254.1:1-4)
OR… “Be still and know the Truth.”
For Lessons 251-260: What is the sin? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
”Sin is insanity. ²It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. ³And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. … Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. … A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. ²And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game.³The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. ⁴But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

From the Lesson:
“Today we let no ego thoughts direct our words or actions. ²When such thoughts occur, we quietly step back and look at them, and then we let them go. ³We do not want what they would bring with them. ⁴And so we do not choose to keep them. ⁵They are silent now. ⁶And in the stillness, hallowed by His Love, God speaks to us and tells us of our will, as we have chosen to remember Him.” (ACIM, W-254.2:1-6)
Basically, this Lesson is telling us: “Be still and know.” When I allow myself to stop, breathe, and check in, I’m able to hear the soft, gentle Inner Voice I’ve come to know as my Higher Self. The Course calls it God or the Holy Spirit. It took me a while to discern this Voice over my ego’s voice.
My ego voice is usually judgmental or fearful. Its thoughts tend to start with “You should…” or “You need to…” or “Are you sure this is good enough?” or “Oh, you don’t want to do that.” Generally, “you” is in there somewhere.
My Higher Voice uses a soft, imperative tone, and it feels like it’s coming from behind my head, just over one shoulder. Its thoughts are usually direct and short: “call home,” “use markers,” “do the mandala of the day,” “clean out the refrigerator,” “bring the umbrella.” When I’ve listened, it’s been spot on every time.
When I don’t listen, I usually miss something. One time, headed out for a walk, I heard “bring the binoculars.” My resistance thought was “why would I need binoculars?” So I left them. At the park, I noticed a commotion at the tops of several enormous trees—a large family of great blue herons. Standing there looking up, I thought, “I should have brought the binoculars.”
Today I got to experience it again while coloring the current section of this week’s Mandala of the Week. Before sitting down, I heard “use different shades of green,” “color the next outer row,” “add shadow to the yellow sections.”
Now’s as good a time as any to mention that when I start a new mandala, I rarely know in advance what it’s supposed to look like when it’s done. It’s a day-by-day process. I’ve been coloring mandalas for over 25 years, and I’ve learned to listen to that Inner Voice because I trust each one will look great when it’s finished. Most of the time, I’m surprised by how well they turn out—especially with the colors They suggested.
Granted, this is a mundane example of listening to God’s voice. But because I’ve listened for so long while coloring, I’ve opened myself to listening more throughout the day. Today’s Lesson suggests that “we let no ego thoughts direct our words or actions.” So far, I’d say I’m about 75% there. But as the Lesson also says, when ego thoughts do occur, “we quietly step back and … we do not choose to keep them.” That’s what I did today—and what I plan to keep doing.
“Lesson 254 basically gives me four words that, when practiced diligently, propel me into a whole different reality. ‘I need do nothing.’ ”
