Lesson 255: ”This day I choose to spend in perfect peace.”

Reframe: Today, I dedicate myself to calm, clarity, and inner peace..

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“And so, my Father, would I pass this day with You. ²Your Son has not forgotten You. ³The peace You gave him still is in his mind, and it is there I choose to spend today.” (ACIM, W-255.2:1-3)

OR… “I choose peace.”

For Lessons 251-260What is the sin? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
Sin is insanity. ²It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. ³And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. … Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. … A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. ²And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game.³The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. ⁴But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all.”

From the PART II IntroductionRead the whole introduction here.

Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

From the Lesson:

³Let me this day have faith in Him Who says I am God’s [Child]. ⁴And let the peace I choose be mine today bear witness to the truth of what He says. ⁵God’s [Child] can have no cares, and must remain forever in the peace of Heaven. ⁶In His Name, I give today to finding what my Father wills for me, accepting it as mine, and giving it to all my [Creator’s Children], along with me.” (ACIM, W-255.1:3-6)

In general, when I think of peace, I think of a serene landscape. Maybe sitting in a lovely garden or walking along a forest trail or tropical beach. Except for the gentle sounds of nature, it’s quiet. No one around to disturb me. And yet, that’s all outside of me, where I have little control over the environment. At any moment, someone or something could disrupt it or me.

And what about what’s going on in my head? It matters little what’s going on outside of me if my mind is worried, fearful, or agitated. For me to have peace within takes a little more effort. Listening to a gentle meditation or soothing music while focusing on my breathing often helps. But what happens afterwards? At first I feel calm and centered, but without continuing to remind myself of this blessed state of being, I gradually shift back into busy mind and peace is nowhere to be found.

And then there’s today’s Lesson, which brings us to a different level of peace—where we’re to choose to spend our day in perfect peace. Before reading the content of the Lesson, I thought it was going to be about what I just talked about: tranquil setting on the outside, calm thoughts inside. But no, this peace—this perfect peace—is about the peace that comes when we choose to “bear witness to the truth of what [God] says.” That we are God’s children, holy, whole, and complete. Limitless. United as One and more than these bodies.

Sitting with and embracing these ideas gives me a deeper sense of peace. Beyond what’s going on outside of me, beyond creating a calm brain. Actually, in a weird way—good weird—I was able to get to a place where I understood that it doesn’t matter what’s going on around me or within my body, this deep knowing feels solid and strong. It was only for a few minutes at a time, but it felt peaceful.

Applying this to my thoughts about the wars, natural disasters, and suffering going on in the world these days, I found when I focused on the Divine knowing from this Lesson, I could feel this deeper peace. It doesn’t mean I don’t care about any of it or that I’m being naive or even ignoring any of it. To me, it means that even though these things are happening, I can be at peace knowing that I am of the Divine and I’m Divinely loved and supported beyond measure; and that we all are.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. News and social media feeds were filled with images and stories from that day—some horrifying, others uplifting. Thinking about it again with today’s Lesson, I paused, took a breath, and repeated: I am a child of God, holy, whole, and complete. This brought me to peace. While maintaining it, I looked at the event again. Even though it happened, what came to mind this time was how we all came together. We found our unity, our community. So it is possible for us. Now if we could just figure out how to maintain that level of love and support for each other without needing a catastrophic event to get there.

Today’s Lesson showed me a deeper level of peace that I hadn’t considered before. It’s been talked about in prior Lessons and I did the practices, but today it clicked. It’s the knowing who I am that brought me to peace. While creating a peaceful environment and deep breathing help get me there, it’s the knowing that brings it home.

I’m not there 100% of the time, but knowing it’s possible to attain inspires me to keep reminding myself to find that level of peace as often as I can; to accept it as mine, and then give it to others, along with me, just as the Lesson says.
