Lesson 272: ”How can illusions satisfy God’s Son ?”
Reframe: Illusions cannot fulfill my true nature; only truth brings peace.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Father, the truth belongs to me. ²My home is set in Heaven by Your Will and mine. ³Can dreams content me? ⁴Can illusions bring me happiness? ⁵What but Your memory can satisfy Your Son? ⁶I will accept no less than You have given me. ⁷I am surrounded by Your Love, forever still, forever gentle and forever safe. ⁸God’s Son must be as You created him.” (ACIM, W-272.1:1-8)
OR… “I choose truth over illusions.”
For Lessons 271-280: What is the Christ? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”Christ is God’s Son as He created Him. ²He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well. ³He is the Thought which still abides within the Mind that is His Source. ⁴He has not left His holy home, nor lost the innocence in which He was created. ⁵He abides unchanged forever in the Mind of God.” (ACIM, W-pII.6.1:1-5).
OR put another way…
”We are all of the Light, created by the Light, united with the Light and one another in the Light. Be the Light.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
From the Lesson:
“Today we pass illusions by. ²And if we hear temptation call to us to stay and linger in a dream, we turn aside and ask ourselves if we, the Sons of God, could be content with dreams, when Heaven can be chosen just as easily as hell, and love will happily replace all fear.” (ACIM, W-272.2:1-2)
Ok, let me put this is more practical terms, at least as I understand it. When I let ego mind be in charge, everything I experience goes through a filter clouded with thoughts of fear, limiting beliefs, and grievances. This filter creates the illusion that these thoughts are real.
In the earlier Lessons, the illusionary thoughts were more obvious to me like recognizing a resentment I’d been holding onto for decades or noticing how tense my body gets when I think about having to market my art. Because they’re more obvious, it’s easier for me to ask God to help me see the truth about them.
Of late though, the ego mind’s thoughts have been more subtle, they tend to fly below my radar. For instance while following along an exercise video today, the trainer switched to the next exercise and my first thought was “Oh, I hate this exercise.” I’ve probably said that to myself every time she’s included it in her routine but barely noticed it. Until today. I caught it immediately. That came from my ego mind. How could I tell? I didn’t feel peace, love, or joy when I said it. I felt annoyed with the exercise and irritated at the trainer for “making” me do it.
I did the exercise anyway but today, I chose to find the truth behind this thought while doing it. First I reminded myself that the exercise itself is neutral. My thought about it was not. So what triggered that thought? The answer came almost immediately. I “hated” it because I couldn’t do this one as well as the trainer could. It “made” me feel inadequate, which meant I wasn’t good enough. There it was. With that insight, I could correct that illusion with probably the most important principle of the Course: I am as God created me, whole and complete.” I took a deep breath and repeated that statement a couple of times. By the time, I felt calmer and more at peace. The funny part? It took all of 90 seconds to process. Then it was time to move onto the next exercise.
For the remainder of the video, I thought about how often I use the phrase “I hate” without ever questioning where it comes from or if how I used it was true. In this case the ego mind created the illusion that this particular exercise was awful and I felt awful. When I changed my mind about it, the illusion was gone. While I don’t love it—yet—I don’t have to lose my peace over it.
“Today, we pass illusions by. We let love happily replace all fear.”
