Lesson 277: ”Let me not bind Your Son with laws I made.”
Reframe: I release judgments and self-imposed limits on others and myself.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Your Son is free, my Father. ²Let me not imagine I have bound him with the laws I made to rule the body. ³He is not subject to any laws I made by which I try to make the body more secure. ⁴He is not changed by what is changeable. ⁵He is not slave to any laws of time. ⁶He is as You created him, because he knows no law except the law of love.” (ACIM, W-277.1:1-6)
OR… “Who am I to limit others or myself.”
For Lessons 271-280: What is the Christ? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”Christ is God’s Son as He created Him. ²He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well. ³He is the Thought which still abides within the Mind that is His Source. ⁴He has not left His holy home, nor lost the innocence in which He was created. ⁵He abides unchanged forever in the Mind of God.” (ACIM, W-pII.6.1:1-5).
OR, put another way…
”We are all of the Light, created by the Light, united with the Light and one another in the Light. Be the Light.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
I take today’s Lesson to be about the judgments and limitations we put on others as well as ourselves. To do so is to override what God has created and thus override our truth—that they and I are holy, whole, and complete, the Light of Light, inherently gifted with peace, love, and joy. I see it as putting a smudged filter between me and everything—including myself.
Today this really hits home regarding the judgments and limitations I put on myself. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve grown to understand how much my limiting beliefs hold me back from full-on shining my Light.
Why do I do that? Up until recently, it’s been out of habit. They feel hard-wired and seemingly impossible to change.
Where did they come from? As I understand it, at some point long ago I took on a basic belief that I was not enough. Over time, I collected other beliefs that supported that initial one—beliefs like I’m not as good an artist as others, I’m not good at selling, or I can’t make a living as an artist.
Ever since I learned about limiting beliefs, I’ve wanted to rid myself of mine. But going from feeling like I’m not good enough to “I am the Light of God, whole and complete just as I am” feels like quite a leap and a bit abstract. I appreciate that the Course teaches we can make leaps like this, but for me the gap feels too big. I need something that can bridge that gap.
Then I remembered a channeled reading I did this past Wednesday. The topic was letting go of what no longer serves. In the session, the idea of “limiting beliefs” came up, along with a way to let them go by redefining the belief. It’s similar to creating a new habit rather than trying to stop an old one.
For instance, the belief “I’m not good enough” could be redefined as “It’s possible that I am good enough.” The old belief has a finality about it—as in, why bother doing anything if I’m not good enough. It shuts the door on any forward progress; it turns out the Light. The redefined one opens a door. It makes me curious: what would that look like, or how would I make that happen? It makes me excited to examine all of my limiting beliefs this way, with the ultimate goal of releasing them all and truly living as the Light that I am.
I can see where this new perspective can change the judgments and limitations I put on others as well. Rather than judging the person I saw walking into the FedEx office last week as messy and frazzled, I could reframe it to “It’s possible that this person has had a rough day.” Next time it happens, I could reframe it as “This person is the Light of God.” Then eventually I won’t need a reframe because I won’t be triggered at all. I’ll just know not to bind Your Son with judgments I have made.
Another way I could apply reframing is with my art: it’s possible that my art is good enough. Just saying that makes me want to get in my studio to see what else I can create.
“Today, I commit to forsaking all made-up laws. I claim instead my freedom and know the only law to which I’m bound is the law of love.”
