Lesson 280: ”What limits can I lay upon God’s Son ?”

Reframe: No true limits exist in the essence of love and consciousness.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Today let me give honor to Your Son, for thus alone I find the way to You. ²Father, I lay no limits on the Son You love and You created limitless. ³The honor that I give to him is Yours, and what is Yours belongs to me as well.”  (ACIM, W-280.2:1-3)

OR… “You and I were created limitless.”

For Lessons 271-280: What is the Christ? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”Christ is God’s Son as He created Him. ²He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well. ³He is the Thought which still abides within the Mind that is His Source. ⁴He has not left His holy home, nor lost the innocence in which He was created. ⁵He abides unchanged forever in the Mind of God.” (ACIM, W-pII.6.1:1-5).

OR put another way…

”We are all of the Light, created by the Light, united with the Light and one another in the Light. Be the Light.”

From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.

“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

My first thought after reading today’s Lesson was, “Oh crap. I picked a bad day to spend three hours doing highway driving.” On second thought, this could be a great day to practice honoring my fellow drivers as part of today’s Lesson.

Yeah, well, that didn’t go as planned. At least not on the trip up. When I found myself even slightly triggered by another person’s driving, I used one of three ego-stopping mantras from my past: “LoveLoveLove,” “That’s interesting,” and “They are the light of God.” The more I tried to stop the triggering, the more I experienced it. To God I said, “Is this some kind of test?”

Along with my triggered reactions, I added self-judgment to the mix. Each time I criticized someone else, I knew it was my ego mind in action. Then I condemned myself for being triggered—more ego. Arg! What I realize now is that I created an endless loop of trying to suppress my judgments about other drivers and then about myself, so I was never able to fully release these thoughts. They just kept accumulating.

None of this honored others or myself. Thankfully, I had a lovely talk with a good friend about my drive up and my anxiety about the trip home. “What do I need to do to prep myself before I return?” I asked. He said, “You need to set an intention to notice all the kind and considerate drivers on the road with you.” That’s when I realized I had unconsciously chosen to be on the lookout for “bad” drivers. It’s like someone talking about red cars—then all I see afterwards are red cars.

So the whole way home, I prayed: “Help me see kind and considerate drivers.” And it worked. Not only that, but I had an epiphany. Of the hundreds of cars I shared the road with today, most of them were kind and considerate. It was probably that way on the way up this morning too, but I only noticed the handful that weren’t because those were the ones I was afraid I’d have to deal with.

How does this relate to the Lesson? When I started out this morning, I was already fearing the bad behavior of other drivers. In my mind, I was limiting them all with my judgment and thus dishonoring them—God’s creations. Here’s the ironic part: of all of us, I was the only one I know of who suffered.

What I didn’t expect to learn was that when I limit others, I am limiting myself. More importantly, though, is the question: “Who am I to limit what God has made limitless?” But there’s another lesson here too: my intention matters. I had unconsciously chosen to look for what I feared. Next time, I want to be more conscious about choosing to see what I truly want to see.

Returning home with this new insight made for a more peaceful, joyful ride because I chose to honor my fellow drivers, who, like me, are the Son of God.
