Lesson 288 ”Let me forget my brother’s past today.”
Reframe: I release past grievances and see others anew.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“This is the thought that leads the way to You, and brings me to my goal. ²I cannot come to You without my brother. ³And to know my Source, I first must recognize what You created one with me. ⁴My brother’s is the hand that leads me on the way to You. ⁵His sins are in the past along with mine, and I am saved because the past is gone. ⁶Let me not cherish it within my heart, or I will lose the way to walk to You. ⁷My brother is my savior. ⁸Let me not attack the savior You have given me. ⁹But let me honor him who bears Your Name, and so remember that It is my own.” (ACIM, W-288.1:1-9)
OR… “The past is gone; We are One with Everyone.”
For Lessons 281-290: What is the Holy Spirit? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. ²Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given Him, to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth.” (ACIM, W-pII.7.1:1-2).
OR put another way…
”We are gifted with a mediator who points to truth when we are lost in illusions.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
Today’s Lesson asks us to “behold your brother in the light of holiness,” with the caveat that no one is holier than anyone else. We are all equally holy. We’re also asked to see each person as our savior. This is easy with people I see as kind and compassionate; it’s more difficult with those I see as the opposite.
Right now, my ego is chomping at the bit to share its opinion. I’m sensing a lot of “yes, but” thoughts: “Yes, but what about the guy who killed his family?” “Yes, but what about the woman who embezzled millions from a charity?” “Yes, but what about the dictator who takes away his citizens’ rights?” The ego continues, “You’re telling me I have to behold them in the light of holiness? I’m supposed to see them as my savior?” Yes, according to today’s Lesson.
I see the ego’s point. It’s challenging to behold the holiness of others when they cause harm, especially when they continue without regret or contrition. This is when I have to dig deep and see it from a higher place. How? My regular practice. I get quiet. Breathe deep. Place my hand over my heart and ask the Holy Spirit to help me see the holiness in others as well as myself. Then I wait.
From this place, I understand the Lesson. If I suspend what I consider to be the sinful behavior of others—and myself—I can see past it and into their Light. I’m not seeing their faces so much as seeing them as glowing sources of Light. This allows me to see that, as the Lesson says, their “sins are in the past along with mine. And I am saved because the past is gone.”
As I said, I can forget the past of people I see as caring. That would be a great place to start applying this Lesson. As I’m able to forget their past, I can broaden my scope, making it easier to eventually include everyone. And as I come up to people I find challenging, I could adopt this affirmation with the intention that in time I can forget their past:
“Even though their behavior appears to be to the contrary, I am willing to behold them in the light of holiness and acknowledge them as my savior, as I am theirs.”
