Lesson 289 ”The Past is over. It can touch me not.”

Reframe: The past no longer binds me; I live fully in the present.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Father, let me not look upon a past that is not there. ²For You have offered me Your Own replacement, in a present world the past has left untouched and free of sin. ³Here is the end of guilt. ⁴And here am I made ready for Your final step. ⁵Shall I demand that You wait longer for Your Son to find the loveliness You planned to be the end of all his dreams and all his pain?” (ACIM, W-289.2:1-5)

OR… “Let me be here now.”

For Lessons 281-290: What is the Holy Spirit? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. ²Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given Him, to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth.” (ACIM, W-pII.7.1:1-2).

OR put another way…

”We are gifted with a mediator who points to truth when we are lost in illusions.”

From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.

“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

From the Lesson:

“Unless the past is over in my mind, the real world must escape my sight. ²For I am really looking nowhere; seeing but what is not there. ³How can I then perceive the world forgiveness offers? ⁴This the past was made to hide, for this the world that can be looked on only now. ⁵It has no past. ⁶For what can be forgiven but the past, and if it is forgiven it is gone.” (ACIM, W-289.1:1-6)

Intellectually, I understand today’s Lesson. I’m not fully there yet, but I appreciate the reminder. We were first introduced to this idea in the early Lessons, where we were taught things like “nothing is as it seems,” “we’ve given everything meaning,” and “I see only the past.” In its simplest form, we could look at a cup and notice how we’ve given it all the meaning it has for us based on our past experiences. If we had an issue with cups as children, we may feel some anxiety around them as adults. If we enjoyed tea with a favorite grandmother, cups bring up fond memories.

Today we go deeper. This isn’t about ignoring our past—it’s what brought us here. It’s about letting go of whatever thoughts the ego has latched onto from the past to try to rule over us today and keep us from seeing who we truly are. The ego doesn’t keep the past as a memory; it replays it as a reminder—”you can’t draw, remember?”—and when I answer “oh yeah, that’s right,” I’ve just re-accepted an old conclusion as present fact.

For instance, as a child I was told I couldn’t sing. It was embarrassing, and I took it to heart. But I loved to sing, so I taught myself the harmony parts. This way I could still sing with others instead of being a soloist. Then in college, as part of a music class, we each had to take turns singing in front of the class. I panicked. You can’t sing, remember? Because I wanted to do well, I had about two weeks to get over a 15-year belief and trust that I’d be okay. Turned out, I could sing. Maybe not Carnegie Hall quality, but good enough to get by.

Revisiting this memory helps me see that maybe I can revisit other beliefs I picked up from my past that hide my light and my true identity. Looking at them in this new light, I can forgive myself for taking them on in the first place—and accept that they can’t touch me now. They are not who I am.

“Lesson 289 … says that until my mind gives up on my past, until it surrenders the countless cultural myths, the real world—the infinite Divine Broadcast that airs possibility, joy, and freedom—will be hidden from my sight.” — “The Course in Miracles Experiment” by Pam Grout
