Lesson 290 ”My present happiness is all I see.”
Reframe: I focus on the joy and peace that are available to me now.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“With this resolve I come to You, and ask Your strength to hold me up today, while I but seek to do Your Will. ²You cannot fail to hear me, Father. ³What I ask have You already given me. ⁴And I am sure that I will see my happiness today.”(ACIM, W-290.2:1-4)
OR… “I am open to seeing happiness.”
For Lessons 281-290: What is the Holy Spirit? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. ²Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given Him, to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth.” (ACIM, W-pII.7.1:1-2).
OR put another way…
”We are gifted with a mediator who points to truth when we are lost in illusions.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Today’s Lesson tells us that as long as I refuse to look at illusions, what I’ll see is my present happiness. As long as I see things with the eyes of peace, love, and joy, I will experience happiness. And today, I did—at least three times.
This morning my hair stylist had yet to arrive for our appointment. I waited patiently and checked and rechecked my confirmation. I had the correct day and time. Still I remained calm. I texted her to let her know I was there, then waited some more. I figured this might be a good time to start culling excess photos from my phone, which was surprisingly enjoyable.
She texted panicked apologies and asked if I could wait a bit longer—she’d be there as soon as she could. Worried she might end up driving frazzled, I told her, “Slow down. I can wait.” She still felt the need to apologize when she arrived, but at least she was calm. For the next forty-five minutes we enjoyed each other’s company while she did her magic with my hair. Thrilled with the results, we hugged and I left happy.
Later I stopped at my favorite vintage shop, which is so loaded with cool stuff it’s almost impossible to see everything in one visit. When I almost tripped over my own feet, it put me in a position to see this small, narrow wooden box labeled “Sacred Geometry Dice.” Inside was a set of six crystals in different sacred geometry shapes. My heart skipped a beat. What an amazing find. The owner, fully aware of my mandala art and my use of sacred geometry, offered me a 20% discount because she saw how happy I was to find the set. On top of that, the statue of Mother Mary I’d ordered from them for my garden had arrived for me to take home. Oh happy day!
Afterwards I went for my daily walk around the neighborhood. Leaves are changing colors and falling everywhere. It’s a beautiful sight, at least to me. On one long stretch of road, a bunch of leaves had piled up along the curb. Allowing my inner child to come out and play, I shuffled through all of them with pure delight. No pause or breath required that time; the happiness was just there.
Looking back, I’m aware there were times in each case I could have gone the ego-mind route: angry at the hair stylist, upset for tripping, annoyed by all the leaves. And at different times today, I did—driving through heavier-than-usual traffic was one of them. Each time, I paused and breathed—which always brings me back to the present, to myself and my surroundings—and remembered I could see peace instead of this. And with that shift, I returned to happiness.
