Lesson 291 ”This is a day of stillness and peace.”
Reframe: Today I embrace calm, stillness, and inner peace.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“This day my mind is quiet, to receive the Thoughts You offer me. ²And I accept what comes from You, instead of from myself. ³I do not know the way to You. ⁴But You are wholly certain. ⁵Father, guide Your Son along the quiet path that leads to You. ⁶Let my forgiveness be complete, and let the memory of You return to me.” (ACIM, W-291.2:1-6)
OR… “I choose peace.”
For Lessons 291-300: What is the Real World? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”The real world is a symbol, like the rest of what perception offers. ²Yet it stands for what is opposite to what you made.³Your world is seen through eyes of fear, and brings the witnesses of terror to your mind. ⁴The real world cannot be perceived except through eyes forgiveness blesses, so they see a world where terror is impossible, and witnesses to fear can not be found. (ACIM, W-pII.8.1:1-4).
OR put another way…
”The real world shows a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
This morning as I read the Lesson, I thought: oh, this should be easy. Then I went to play cards with some friends in a community area of a local grocery store. I was looking forward to the four of us playing a nice, quiet game. Surprise! There were eight of us.
The idea of the Lesson went right out the window. Why? Because I remembered how overstimulating it was the last time eight of us played. There was nothing peaceful or still about it. This was an enthusiastic, energized group. Is it possible to be claustrophobic from too much energy?
As someone with childhood PTSD, I admit I panicked. I knew it at the time, and yet I let it take hold. I did my usual routine of pausing and taking deep breaths. It gave me a momentary reprieve and helped keep me from going deeper into the panic. Looking back, I realize I forgot to recite my usual go-to mantra, which usually helps ground me: “Holy Spirit, help me see this differently.” It’s not a difficult one to remember, which shows me just how much I let the ego mind rule. After a while, four people left, leaving four of us to play. That’s when I was able to do my routine and return to calm, making the rest of the time playing cards peaceful and enjoyable.
My biggest takeaway from today is mindfulness. When we first arrived, I was in a hurry to get something to eat because we were late, so the ego mind was already doing its thing. Then finding out more people were there than I expected was more wood for the ego fire. I know now that had I been fully present and aligned with my inner stillness going into the store, I would have been open to hearing and practicing the Divine thoughts of today’s Lesson.
