Lesson 297 ”Forgiveness is the only gift I give.”

Reframe: Forgiveness is the gift I offer to myself and others.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Father, how certain are Your ways; how sure their final outcome, and how faithfully is every step in my salvation set already, and accomplished by Your grace. ²Thanks be to You for Your eternal gifts, and thanks to You for my Identity.(ACIM, W-297.2:1-2)

OR… “I embrace my true identity with gratitude.”

For Lessons 291-300: What is the Real World? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”The real world is a symbol, like the rest of what perception offers. ²Yet it stands for what is opposite to what you made.³Your world is seen through eyes of fear, and brings the witnesses of terror to your mind. ⁴The real world cannot be perceived except through eyes forgiveness blesses, so they see a world where terror is impossible, and witnesses to fear can not be found. (ACIM, W-pII.8.1:1-4).

OR put another way…

”The real world shows a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace.”

From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.

“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

From the Lesson:

“Forgiveness is the only gift I give, because it is the only gift I want. ²And everything I give I give myself. ³This is salvation’s simple formula. (ACIM, W-297.1:1-3)

Forgiveness, as I understand it from the Course, is changing our minds from the ego’s fear-based perspective to the Divine’s love-based perspective. And most, if not all, of the time, we apply forgiveness to ourselves.

Here’s how it played out for me today.

Continuing with my new mantra from Lesson 292, “slow down,” I set my smartwatch to go off every 30 minutes as a reminder. My practice is to pause, tell myself to slow down, and take a deep breath to ground myself in the present moment. That’s where I can consciously choose which mind to follow.

Today, I added a step to this practice based on Lesson 297: assessing my current state of mind. If I was anxious, worried, or caught up in thoughts about the past or future, I acknowledged that I was operating from the ego’s perspective. In that moment, I forgave myself and chose to change my mind.

For instance, while attending an all-day workshop, I caught myself worrying about whether a couple of people would return the good art pens I had lent them. Recognizing the ego’s role in that thought, I modified my practice: “I forgive myself for letting fear take over my thoughts, and I choose to trust that the pens will be returned.” With that, I returned my attention to the workshop, knowing I could kindly ask for the pens if necessary.

I caught the ego’s presence several other times, too: worrying about whether I was doing an exercise properly, judging the pace of other participants, and judging how the workshop was being managed. Each time, I forgave myself for getting caught up in the ego’s thoughts and interrupting my own peace.

So how is this a gift?

Rather than stewing over my pens or getting annoyed with what other people were or weren’t doing, I was able to let go and be present with what was. By choosing to extend forgiveness to myself, I gave myself the peace I wanted. That’s the gift.

“Lesson 297 tells the ego to shut the f*ck up. Look deeper, it says, look beyond appearances. There, you will find tender hearts and shared humanity.” — “The Course in Miracles Experiment” by Pam Grout
