Today’s Lesson reminds us that our existence in the world is short-lived—a mere instant compared to our eternal existence beyond this world. I’ve lived on this planet long enough to know how fleeting it is. Looking back, I remember times when things seemed to take forever—mostly during childhood and young adult years. Now it seems like it all went by so fast.
Being reminded of this helped me on a long drive today. My mindset was that of a visitor to this earthly plane instead of a resident. I saw most things with awe: Mount Shasta, the mountains of northern California and southern Oregon, farm animals, open fields, the rain and storm clouds through most of those areas.
At one point traffic was barely moving for over a mile without any visible reason. I was making great time up until then. It was a great opportunity to check in with myself: do I want to be agitated, or accept the situation and maintain my peace? I chose peace, and to help me maintain it I turned on some music. The next song to play was Taylor Swift’s bouncy “Shake It Off.” The timing was perfect. As best I could, I “danced” in my seat. I took it as a sign from the Universe to “shake off” the ego mind. Within 15 minutes, traffic cleared and I was on my way.
I understand the Course’s teaching that this world is just an illusion, not real. And yet it also teaches that we can experience the eternal gifts of peace, love, and joy while we’re here—that we don’t have to wait until our time here ends.
That’s what I’m going to hold onto going forward: to see myself as a visitor here, knowing it will be over in an instant, and that while I’m here I don’t have to succumb to the ego mind’s world of fear. Instead, through forgiveness, I can experience heaven on earth.
