Now it’s time to add some depth and dimension to the background doodles. Today I started with the red/magenta sections.
My painting progress:

1 – add shading to first section of red
2 – add shading to the next section of red
3 – continue adding shading to the next red section
4 – add shading to some more red sections
5 – full view – all the red sections are “shaded”
6 – full view with temporary placement of Bohemian Sunset over the background
To create the dimensional look, I used alizarin crimson and blue violet in the areas where I wanted there to be shadow, based on my imagined light source (coming from the upper left), and to blend in with the shading on the mandala. I used a matte gel medium to blend and thin out the colors so they would blend in more smoothly with the base coat.
