2017-265: Observe – Day 1

This week’s Mandala of the Week, Observe Mandala, starts with a 5×7 indigo blue canvas, painted from another day.

My progress today:

1 – start with a canvas painted with indigo blue

2 – with a black gel pen, outline a design

3 – using a metallic purple pen, start drawing over the outline

4 – add some more design elements with bronze gel pen

5 – add some more design elements with a metallic green gel pen

6 – Add some more design elements using yellow, orange, and pink gel pens

While staying at a friend’s house, their dog, Reggie, inspired the title of this mandala. Lying next to me I held up the blue canvas to him I asked him what to call this mandala. He just continued to intently stare out the sliding glass doors into the garden, without breaking his gaze. In my head I heard “Observe.” Okay, Observe it is.

Like Reggie I intently stared at the canvas. Different shapes and patterns emerged from the paint strokes already on the canvas. With a black gel pen, I drew out some of what I “saw” (image #2)

Then it was a matter of overlaying the outline with colors that I felt inspired to use in that moment. We’ll “see” where it goes from here on another day.
