22-158 Calm

Today’s Mandala
Calm

“When adversity strikes,
that’s when you have to be
the most calm.
Take a step back, stay strong,
stay grounded and press on.”

— LL Cool J

“We must go beyond
the constant clamor of ego,
beyond the tools of logic and reason,
to the still, calm place within us:
the realm of the soul.”

— Deepak Chopra

“The greater the level
of calmness of our mind,
the greater our peace of mind,
the greater our ability to enjoy
a happy and joyful life.”

— Dalai Lama

Today’s MotD reminds us that our quest is not to get to some location where it’s calm and peaceful (although it definitely gives us a head start), but to create the realm of calmness within regardless of the calamity happening on the outside. More importantly it’s about creating calmness within so as to silence our monkey minds.

The error perceived about meditation (and other calming techniques) is that we’re supposed to wrestle with our chaotic thoughts to get them to stop. Instead meditation and the like are about focusing our attention elsewhere (watching the breath, repeating a mantra, counting, walking) so that the mind calms down because we’re bypassing the thoughts; like a tantrum-ing child…if you ignore it, eventually it realizes it’s not getting the attention it wants, so it calms down.

From this place of calm, all things are possible because we’re more consciously aware and open to receiving the insight and guidance from our Inner Guidance System that is needed in any given moment…especially the chaotic ones.
