Lesson 001: ”Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything.”

AI Reframe: The things I see don’t hold inherent meaning on their own.

Suggested Exercise: Two times today for about a minute each, slowly look around wherever you are and apply this statement to each thing you notice, without reacting, judging, analyzing, or rejecting: this ________ has no meaning.

My take on it: It’s a rather bold exercise right off the bat because it defies what we think we know to be true about everything in our individual and collective worlds. As I look around my room, my mind “knows” (or thinks it knows) that everything I’m looking at has some kind of meaning for it and/or for me. And now they’re not supposed to ???

What The Course is offering up for consideration is a different perspective on these things. Right now I’m looking at a pair of jeans hanging from a hook on my bedroom door. Already I’m aware that I’ve attached a lot of meaning to them:

—they’re new, they fit but are too long, they’re light blue, they’re also called pants, they’re meant to be worn to cover the lower half of my body, I bought them at Costco—on sale, they’re comfortable to wear, they’re called “jeans” (why? I don’t know actually), they are a common form of clothing especially for Americans, my father hated jeans (a story for another time), they’re called a pair of jeans (why? again, I don’t know), they’re referenced as plural even though there is only one of them on that hook.

What we’re being asked to do with today’s lesson is to allow ourselves to consider that, in and of themselves, these things that we see have no meaning. So using my example, it would be: these jeans have no meaning, this bedroom door has no meaning, that hook has no meaning.

“Everything we think we know, everything we believe to be fact is backwards, wrong side up. … [The Course] is designed to undo and retrain our minds. Which rewires and changes everything in our lives.”
