Lesson 183: ”I call upon God’s Name* and on my own.”
Reframe: I draw on inner guidance and the wisdom that surrounds me.
Suggested Practice:
From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:
”Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.”
Do two 15-minutes practices today.
From today’s Lesson:
“God’s Name* is holy, but no holier than yours. ²To call upon His Name is but to call upon your own.” (ACIM, W-183.1:1-2)
We’re reminded that we are as God* created us. We are united with Them and all They created. So today call out the name that best helps you make this Divine re-connection with God and with Self.
“Practice but this today; repeat God’s Name* slowly again and still again. ²Become oblivious to every name but His. ³Hear nothing else. ⁴Let all your thoughts become anchored on this. ⁵No other word we use except at the beginning, when we say today’s idea but once. ⁶And then God’s Name becomes our only thought, our only word, the only thing that occupies our minds, the only wish we have, the only sound with any meaning, and the only Name of everything that we desire to see; of everything that we would call our own.” (ACIM, W-183.6:1-6)
*God/God’s Name: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God, as ACIM ascribes it, is our happiness.

Message
For those of us who struggle with the term “God,” today’s lesson can feel a bit much. Two-plus pages repeatedly tell us—in various ways—to call out His name. I admit this is triggering for me. I’m still coping with strict religious childhood trauma.
At first, I could only skim the text, reading maybe the first sentence or two of some paragraphs. So I stopped, breathed, and asked the ego mind to step aside so I could observe what was really happening.
I know that being triggered means this is an important lesson. If I truly want the peace, love, and joy the Course promises, I need to process this rather than ignore it.
To ease my angst, I reminded myself of five things:
- The Course teaches that words are symbols of symbols, diluted from their original intent.
- To call upon His Name is to call upon my own—our names are equally holy.
- This series of lessons asks me to notice what impedes my progress.
- I only have to go past my defense for a little while each day; no more is asked or needed.
- A little each day will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.
With that in mind, I read the lesson as written—but with the understanding that “God” meant the infinite principle of pure Love, not the judgmental old guy in the sky. I read through the text and then sat with it for the first practice. I felt a stronger sense of peace. Then this image came to mind: three small black letters—”God”—standing upright on the ground. Behind and all around them stretched a vast landscape of valleys and mountain ranges in greens and purples, with a radiant glow of warm yellows and oranges from the golden sun just above the horizon. Along with the image came a warm, uplifting feeling—a picture worth a thousand words. It felt like a glimpse of the One I was calling.
For me, this image best captures what arises when I call. We are so much more than a name.
“Instead, I call on the name of Source. I become oblivious to everything else.”
