Lesson 182: ”I will be still an instant and go home.”
Reframe: In stillness, I reconnect with my True Self.
Suggested Practice:
From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:
”Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.”
Do two 15-minutes practices today. Be still and know peace. That’s essentially it.
From today’s Lesson:
“When you are still an instant, when the world recedes from you, when valueless ideas cease to have value in your restless mind, then will you hear His Voice. ²So poignantly He calls to you that you will not resist Him longer. ³In that instant He will take you to His home, and you will stay with Him in perfect stillness, silent and at peace, beyond all words, untouched by fear and doubt, sublimely certain that you are at home.” (ACIM, W-182.8:1-3)
”Take time today to lay aside your shield which profits nothing, and lay down the spear and sword you raised against an enemy without existence. … ⁹Be still an instant and go home with Him*, and be at peace a while. (ACIM, W-182.12:9)
*God/Him: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.

Message
Lesson 182 tells us that we can return to our natural state of peace—or as the Course calls it, home—in an instant. Today gave me plenty of practice. I spent the day in Portland, which meant a three-hour round trip drive.
I’ve written before about how driving on highways triggers me. Other people’s driving habits—let’s call them less than cordial—often get under my skin. The Course would say it’s not worth losing my peace over it. Consider me a work in progress.
Today I used two terms to help me stay or return to peace: “be still” and “namasté.” Whenever I noticed my body tensing up and my thoughts toward other drivers turning unkind, I’d tell myself “be still.” Instantly, my body relaxed and my mind settled. It was home. I was amazed at how fast it happened. In my mind, I’d see a large open landscape—somewhere in the southwest—with a mountain range along the horizon and the soft yellow-orange glow of a sunset. It felt like the closest thing to heaven on earth.
I used “namasté” whenever my ego decided a driver was unworthy of anything positive from me. It lessened the charge and gave me a more graceful perspective, but it didn’t bring me home. “Be still” did that. Of the two, “be still” was more effective—simple, powerful, and it worked every time I used it.
How long did the peace last? Sometimes a few minutes. Sometimes longer. There was no pattern. It came down to me happening to notice I was tense again and then telling myself “be still.” Now my goal is to make it a regular practice and to extend the stillness longer each time.
Essentially, I’m home when I’m at peace.
*Namasté—as I understand it, it means the light in me sees the light in you.
“It’s a special time for me and the Holy S to kick down doors, bump into new visions, and say, ‘hell yeah!’ to the freedom I forfeit no more.”
