Lesson 184: ”The Name of God* is my inheritance.”

Reframe: The truth of love and unity is my birthright.

Suggested Practice:

From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:
Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.

Do two 15-minutes practices today.

From today’s Lesson:

No one can fail who seeks the meaning of the Name of God. ²Experience must come to supplement the Word. ³But first you must accept the Name for all reality, and realize the many names you gave its aspects have distorted what you see, but have not interfered with truth at all. ⁴One Name we bring into our practicing. ⁵One Name we use to unify our sight.”(ACIM, W-184.13:1-5)

Today we go past the labels and focus on the meaning of “the Name of God”. The paradox? Per the Lesson, God has no name. So whatever label you choose to name this “concept of pure love”, know that it’s not the label that’s important, it’s whatever will get you to the essence of that which we call God. And whatever you call It, know that we are that as well. Ponder this as you do your practices today.

*God/God’s Name: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God, as ACIM ascribes it, is our happiness.

Message

Growing up Catholic, I learned about the saints—each one specializing in some area of human life. Saint Anthony, the patron saint of lost things (and souls, I think), has helped me find most everything I’ve ever lost.

About a year ago, I changed how I prayed to him. Instead of the solemn “Dear Saint Anthony, please help me find…” I made it playful. Now I say, in a New York Italian accent: “Hey. Tony Tony Bo Bony. Help me find…” Guess what? It still works—often faster than the old way. I almost feel like he’s having fun with it too.

Why share this? To show that it’s not about the labels we attach to things, saints, or God—it’s about the intent behind them. Names are vehicles, not destinations. Whatever name you want to call God, use it. If calling God “Cupcake” connects you with divine Love, then use it.

This lesson teaches us to use whatever label helps open the door to our inheritance—our true identity, which we share with God. Peace, love, and joy are our birthright—no matter what name you call it by.

My new label for God? “Hey, Jo. Whadaya know.” It feels light, fun, and it makes me feel more connected.

“Decisions are continuous and, most of the time, we don’t even realize we’re making them.”
