Lesson 206: Review of Lesson 186: Salvation of the world depends on me.

Reframe: My awareness and choices support the well-being of the whole.

Suggested Practice:

Overall Approach to the Review of Lessons 181-200:

“Besides the time you give morning and evening, which should not be less than fifteen minutes, and the hourly remembrances you make throughout the day, use the idea as often as you can between them. ³Each of these ideas alone would be sufficient for salvation, if it were learned truly. ⁴Each would be enough to give release to you and to the world from every form of bondage, and invite the memory of God to come again. …

“These practice sessions … are centered round a central theme with which we start and end each lesson. ²It is this:

³I am not a body. ⁴I am free.
⁵For I am still as God created me.

Special thought for today’s Lesson:

186: Salvation of the world depends on me.

²I am entrusted with the gifts of God, because I am His Son. ³And I would give His gifts where He intended them to be.  (ACIM, W-206.1:1-3)

⁶The day begins and ends with this. ⁷And we repeat it every time the hour strikes, or we remember, in between, we have a function that transcends the world we see. ⁸Beyond this, and a repetition of the special thought we practice for the day, no form of exercise is urged, except a deep relinquishment of everything that clutters up the mind, and makes it deaf to reason, sanity and simple truth.

(ACIM, W-rVI.in.1:1–3:8)

“…Permit no idle thought to go unchallenged. ³If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. ⁴Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.”

When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:

This thought I do not want. ³I choose instead _____________

And then repeat the idea for the day, and let it take the place of what you thought.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.5:1–6:4)

Message

When I read the title of Lesson 186—”The salvation of the world depends on me”—my ego freaks out a bit. Why does it all fall on me? How can one person possibly accomplish this? I’m no superhero.

Then I remember: this Lesson, like the Course itself, is an inside job. It’s not about going out to save people. That would require me to judge who needs saving and what they need saving from—a disaster in the making.

Here’s how I understand it instead: salvation means seeing the world and everyone in it through the eyes of love, waking from the dream of separation. From that place, we know better what, if anything, to do.

Reviewing this lesson today reinforces what we’re being asked to do: acknowledge God’s gifts—peace, love, joy—and give them where they’re intended. During the practice, a memory surfaced that brought this home for me.

Years ago, before I knew ACIM, a family member I loved deeply was struggling with addiction. It broke my heart. My ego wanted to fix them—talk sense into them, give advice, tell them what I’d do.

But I paused and listened. My Inner Voice said: Until they’re ready to seek help, there’s nothing you can do. Just tell them you love them and you’re there if they need to talk. So I did. I also prayed that help would come. Three months later, they checked into rehab and have been clean now for 40 years.

Looking back, heeding that Voice was seeing him through love. He didn’t need my lectures; he needed to know someone loved him and was present.

This Lesson asks the same of us: to acknowledge God’s gifts and give them where they’re meant to go. We don’t have to save the world. We just have to do our part by seeing ourselves and everyone else through loving eyes.

For me, “doing my part” means noticing when I’m judging someone or my body tenses up—shallow breathing, tightness. When I catch it, I pause and remind myself: I am not a body, I am free, I am still as God created me. Then I extend that to them: They are not a body. They are free. They are still as God created them. Or simply: I am the light of God, whole and complete. They are the light of God, whole and complete. That’s it—remembering who we both are.

“In this lesson, I celebrate that I am not a body. And I throw confetti, because neither is anybody else.”
