Lesson 223: ”God is my life. I have no life but His.”

Reframe: Life flows through me in every moment.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
One in the morning and one in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Our Father, let us see the face of Christ instead of our mistakes. ²For we who are Your holy Son are sinless. ³We would look upon our sinlessness, for guilt proclaims that we are not Your Son. ⁴And we would not forget You longer. ⁵We are lonely here, and long for Heaven, where we are at home. ⁶Today we would return. ⁷Our Name is Yours, and we acknowledge that we are Your Son.” (ACIM, W-223.2:1-7)

OR a possible alternative…

Divine Light, let us see Love instead of our mistakes. For our True Selves are sinless. To think otherwise, separates us from You. We long for Truth, where we are at home. Today we remember we are as You made us and we are all One with You.

From the PART II IntroductionRead the whole introduction here.

Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

For Lessons 221-230: Forgiveness is the theme. Read the whole article here.
“Forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. ²It does not pardon sins and make them real. ³It sees there was no sin. ⁴And in that view are all your sins forgiven. ⁵What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? ⁶Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. ⁷What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God.” (ACIM, W-pII.1.1:1-7)

Message

From the Lesson:

I was mistaken when I thought I lived apart from God, a separate entity that moved in isolation, unattached, and housed within a body. ²Now I know my life is God’s, I have no other home, and I do not exist apart from Him. ³He has no Thoughts that are not part of me, and I have none but those which are of Him.” (ACIM, W-223.1:1-3)”

Today’s Lesson reminds me of something I’ve heard many times from many people: we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Or: we are consciousness in human form. Either way, the message is that life in these bodies is temporary and not all there is. Some call Earth an experiment. The Course calls it an illusion.

And within this human experience—this illusion—we also contend with the ego mind, which keeps us trapped in the belief that we’re separate from each other and from our Divine connection. Why? Because the ego thrives on our fears, grievances, and limiting beliefs.

Honestly, I’m not fond of today’s wording. On the surface, it sounds like I can only live the life God wants me to live, as if my own desires don’t matter. It conjures images of cloistered nuns—and I’m still recovering from a strict religious upbringing. Upon further reflection, though, I recognize the ego’s hand in that interpretation.

And after 222 Lessons, I know that’s not what the Course—or God—intends. The practices offer the truth about our existence, here and beyond. It’s not always easy to remember; my ego can be loud with its fear-mongering. Yet when I ask for peace or to see things differently, my prayers are always answered, often in the simplest way: a shift in my mind.

Where I might be angry at someone cutting me off in traffic, I now see them as neutral. Where I might be frustrated by slow service, I now see it as a moment to breathe and let peace settle. Where I might fear trying something new, I now see it as a chance to acknowledge the fear while trusting I’ll be okay regardless of the outcome. All these shifts happen because I asked for God’s peace, and that peace was extended through me.

Accepting that I am more than this body—that I am one with God/Universe/Source, fully loved and supported—makes it easier to embrace that I am He and He is me, and therefore my life is His life.

“Lesson 223 tells me the only problem I could ever have is seeing myself differently from how the Dude sees me.”
