Lesson 257: ”Let me remember what my purpose is.”
Reframe: I remember my true purpose: to live in awareness, love, and clarity.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Father, forgiveness is Your chosen means for our salvation. ²Let us not forget today that we can have no will but Yours.³And thus our purpose must be Yours as well, if we would reach the peace You will for us.” (ACIM, W-257.2:1-3)
OR… “My purpose is peace.”
For Lessons 251-260: What is the sin? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
”Sin is insanity. ²It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. ³And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. … Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. … A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. ²And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game.³The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. ⁴But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Probably the biggest question people struggle with is “What’s my purpose?” When clients ask me this in a channeled reading, the answer I always get is: figure out what you love to do and help some people by doing that. Today’s Lesson goes a step further in its simplicity: peace. That’s our purpose.
In my practice today, I paid attention and discovered that most of the time I’m not at peace. How can I tell? It shows up in my body as a tight stomach, neck, and shoulders, a crunched forehead, and shallow breathing. It shows up in my mind as multitasking thoughts all over the place, filled with fear, worry, and judgment—of me and everybody else. Nowhere near peace, love, or joy.
All day I kept monitoring my body and thoughts, reminding myself to focus on my purpose: peace. I did it mostly with affirmations and deep breathing. Affirmations like: I could know peace instead of this—I choose peace. No judging—just observing. I am safe.
While coloring today’s section of the mandala, I caught myself in non-peace mode over and over: body tense, mind worried about messing it up. Each time, I stopped, breathed, and reminded myself, “I could know peace instead of this. I choose peace.” My body relaxed and my mind cleared. I stopped coloring mindlessly and focused on the pencil in my hand and the color filling each area. I’ve realized the non-peace mode has become a habit—one I intend to break with a new habit: stop, breathe, peace.
Why is this so important? Because now is also the only time I can change who’s ruling my life: ego mind or Divine mind. With ego mind, I’m operating from fear. With Divine mind, from peace and clarity—I can see what’s in front of me instead of what I’m afraid of. It’s like driving a long stretch of highway where it becomes monotonous—so much so that we lose track of where we are. Until we snap ourselves out of it, we’re likely to miss our exit. I once went 10 miles past my exit because I wasn’t present or at peace: I was focused on a presentation I was going to give. The irony? The topic was “The Benefits of Being Present.”
I know that when I’m at peace, I have a clearer connection to the Divine and my mind and body are calm. Now that I’m aware of how much I’m not at peace, I’m inspired to remember what my purpose is.
“Today, I have but one goal. To stand with and for Truth.”
