Lesson 258: ”Let me remember that my goal is God.”
Reframe: I choose to return to alignment with the Source of all love.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Our goal is but to follow in the way that leads to You. ²We have no goal but this. ³What could we want but to remember You? ⁴What could we seek but our Identity? “ (ACIM, W-258.2:1-4)
OR… “I choose to follow the way that leads to peace, love, and joy.”
For Lessons 251-260: What is the sin? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
”Sin is insanity. ²It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. ³And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. … Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. … A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. ²And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game.³The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. ⁴But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all.”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
The Lesson starts with this sentence: “All that is needful is to train our minds to overlook all little senseless aims, and to remember that our goal is God.” (ACIM, W-258.1:1)
I can already sense Juni—my name for my ego mind—chomping at the bit to attack it. I feel like I need to treat her the way I did our dog Sky when he’d pick up something he shouldn’t. I’d have to say “Leave it!” repeatedly until he finally let it go.
To Juni I say: “Yes, this sentence has the word ‘God’ in it. Yes, it’s telling us our human aims are little and senseless. Yes, it’s telling us to overlook what you want or need. It’s okay, we can handle this.”
“But…but…but…,” she interjects.
“Leave it!” I tell her again.
That’s how it goes some days when I’m more in observer mind—noticing versus reacting. As far as the Course is concerned, the ego and its thoughts don’t exist; they aren’t real. To which I say: easy for you to say, you’re not in a human body. Turns out, that’s not real either.
So how does observer mind fit into the Course? Technically, it doesn’t. The Truth is we’re all of God—what I call Divine mind. That’s the factory setting: peace, love, and joy. Listening to ego mind is a choice, conscious or not. Its thoughts are fear-based and hold us back. Using a car as a metaphor, Divine mind is “Drive” and ego mind is “Reverse.” When we stop ego mind, we return to Divine mind.
Observer mind adds “Neutral” and acts like a mediator. It’s a state where I can idle in the present moment, aware that I have a choice: ego mind or Divine mind. Until I reach the point where there’s nothing to decide—where I’ve permanently chosen Divine mind—observer mind lets me see my options from a place of calm.
Back to Juni. Here’s what I had to process today to embrace the Lesson: the difference between the God of my strict religious upbringing—old guy in the sky judging everybody—and the Course’s God, a formless, infinite principle of pure Love. The choice is easy: Divine mind. Juni goes quietly back to her room.
How does this play out in practical terms? Since starting the Lessons this year, Juni shows up less often. I’m less triggered by the news, deadlines, things not going my way. And when I am triggered, I catch it sooner.
For instance, while writing yesterday’s MotD post, my husband asked if I was coming to watch TV anytime soon. I was already tense trying to finish, which meant I was unconsciously letting Juni be in charge. I snapped: “I’m going as fast as I can. I’d get it done a lot faster if you didn’t interrupt me.” As soon as the words left my mouth, I caught it—observer mind. I stopped, took a breath, and consciously chose Divine mind: “I’m sorry. I’m almost done. Give me about 20 minutes.” We both kept our peace.
My takeaway from today’s Lesson: If I want peace, love, and joy, Divine mind is my goal.
“Need physical healing ? Try forgiveness. Desire a better relationship ? Employ forgiveness.”
