Lesson 259: ”Let me remember that there is no sin.”
Reframe: I release guilt and recognize that all is learning and growth.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Father, I would not be insane today. ²I would not be afraid of love, nor seek for refuge in its opposite. ³For love can have no opposite. ⁴You are the Source of everything there is. ⁵And everything that is remains with You, and You with it.”(ACIM, W-259.2:1-5)
OR… “How can I be afraid of love when we are as Love created us?”
For Lessons 251-260: What is the sin? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
”Sin is insanity. ²It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. ³And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. … Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. … A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. ²And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game.³The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. ⁴But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all… How long, O Son of God, will you maintain the game of sin? … ⁵There is no sin. ⁶Creation is unchanged. ⁷Would you still hold return to Heaven back?”
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
As someone who grew up in a strict religious household, “there is no sin” is a foreign concept to me. Not only was I taught about sin and all the guilt and manipulation that goes with it, I was also told I was born with original sin—along with everyone else. What a way to begin a life on Earth. What a horrible thing to attach to a precious newborn.
The Course, however, tells us that God does not recognize sin. It’s a human construct. To assign sin means to pass judgment and condemn, whether I direct it at myself or someone else. And when I condemn, regardless of whom it’s directed at, I condemn myself to suffering (see Lesson 198). God does not judge or condemn, nor does He want us to suffer. He loves us and wills only our happiness. To assign sin is to set my will against His.
In practical terms? If I’m condemning my neighbors for how unkempt their yard is, I’m the one who suffers. I feel anger, frustration, and irritation. None of that equates to peace, love, or joy. The irony? They have no idea I feel this way. Calling them “sinners” doesn’t hurt them, it only hurts my well-being.
So how do I transform that into peace, love, or joy? I notice something my ego wants to judge—my neighbor’s yard, for instance. I say the mantra as much as needed: “No judging—just observing.” If I can’t get past it, I ask God to help me see it differently. Then I look away—but only once I’ve reached peace or at least neutrality. Mostly, what I feel is relief, and that’s what lets the peace come forward. Sometimes the whole thing happens in a flash; other times it takes a while.
The key takeaway for me is that “sin” distorts my vision, disrupts my peace, and causes suffering. Since God doesn’t recognize sin, who am I to usurp His will?
“Today, I surrender every story, every belief, every ‘bad guy’ that hinders my superpower. In doing so, I recognize all those bogeymen never really existed at all.”
