Lesson 268: ”Let all things be exactly as they are.”
Reframe: I accept each moment as it is, without resistance.
Suggested Practice:
From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.
Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)
“Let me not be Your critic, Lord, today, and judge against You. ²Let me not attempt to interfere with Your creation, and distort it into sickly forms. ³Let me be willing to withdraw my wishes from its unity, and thus to let it be as You created it.⁴For thus will I be able, too, to recognize my Self as You created me. ⁵In love was I created, and in love will I remain forever. ⁶What can frighten me, when I let all things be exactly as they are?” (ACIM, W-268.1:1-6)
OR… “Let it be.”
For Lessons 261-270: What is the body? is the theme. Read the whole article here.
”The body is a fence the Son of God imagines he has built, to separate parts of his Self from other parts.”… The body is a dream. ²Like other dreams it sometimes seems to picture happiness, but can quite suddenly revert to fear, where every dream is born. ³For only love creates in truth, and truth can never fear. ⁴Made to be fearful, must the body serve the purpose given it. ⁵But we can change the purpose that the body will obey by changing what we think that it is for… The body is the means by which God’s Son returns to sanity …³The Son of God extends his hand to reach his brother, and to help him walk along the road with him. ⁴Now is the body holy. ⁵Now it serves to heal the mind…³Your safety lies in truth, and not in lies. ⁴Love is your safety. ⁵Fear does not exist. ⁶Identify with love, and you are safe.⁷Identify with love, and you are home. ⁸Identify with love, and find your Self.
From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.
“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message
Today’s Lesson reminds me of one of my favorite teachings found in the Manual for Teachers section of “A Course in Miracles”: You cannot be angry at a fact. It just is. It’s neutral. Just like we learned in Lesson 2 about how we give everything its meaning. The fact doesn’t trigger the reaction, how we interpret it does. Actually, it’s worth presenting exacting what the Manual says:
“Perhaps it will be helpful to remember that no one can be angry at a fact. ²It is always an interpretation that gives rise to negative emotions, regardless of their seeming justification by what appears as facts. ³Regardless, too, of the intensity of the anger that is aroused. ⁴It may be merely slight irritation, perhaps too mild to be even clearly recognized. ⁵Or it may also take the form of intense rage, accompanied by thoughts of violence, fantasied or apparently acted out. ⁶It does not matter. ⁷All of these reactions are the same. ⁸They obscure the truth, and this can never be a matter of degree. ⁹Either truth is apparent, or it is not. ¹⁰It cannot be partially recognized. ¹¹Who is unaware of truth must look upon illusions. (ACIM, M-17.4:1-11)
This simply awareness alone could save us a lot of suffering. Without it we’re just on autopilot with knee-jerk reactions. I know for me, taking an extra moment after a “fact” occurs to truly assess it has helped me keep my peace more often than anything else I’ve learned in the Course.
For instance I recently received an official looking letter from the Social Security Office. At first glance, I panicked. Why? I always tend to panic when receiving something that looks official—my interpretation. My knee-jerk reaction is to think that somehow I’m either in trouble or they have bad news for me. That’s my ego mind in action. As soon as I catch it, I stop, take a breath, and remind myself of the fact that it’s just a letter. And until I open it, all my fearful thoughts about it are pure speculation. Any reactions on my part are me buying into an illusion the ego mind created. As it turned out, the letter was informing me of an update to my account that didn’t require any action on my part—just an fyi.
But what if the letter had been something that could be interpreted as “bad news”, it’s still just a fact. While I may find maintaining my peace could be more challenging, it still doesn’t warrant obscuring the truth of the matter with fear, anger, or grief. And essentially that’s the main theme of the Lesson, to focus on the fact of the matter.
I presented it in a rather mundane example however the Course teaches that there is no levels. Truth is truth. Whether it’s about a letter I received in the mail or that all of us are connected in unity with God as Self.
“The Course minces no words: There is no order of difficulties in miracles. Translated, that means, ‘Nothing is impossible. Nothing is out of reach..”
