Lesson 302 ”Where darkness was I look upon the light.”

Reframe: I shift my focus from illusion to clarity and truth.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Father, our eyes are opening at last. ²Your holy world awaits us, as our sight is finally restored and we can see. ³We thought we suffered. ⁴But we had forgot the Son whom You created. ⁵Now we see that darkness is our own imagining, and light is there for us to look upon. ⁶Christ’s vision changes darkness into light, for fear must disappear when love has come.⁷Let me forgive Your holy world today, that I may look upon its holiness and understand it but reflects my own.” (ACIM, W-302.1:1-7)

OR… “I see the light.”

For Lessons 301-310: What is the second coming? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”Christ’s Second Coming, which is sure as God, is merely the correction of mistakes, and the return of sanity. ²It is a part of the condition that restores the never lost, and re-establishes what is forever and forever true. ³It is the invitation to God’s Word to take illusion’s place; the willingness to let forgiveness rest upon all things without exception and without reserve.” (ACIM, W-pII.9.1:1-3).

OR put another way…

”It’s when we fully embrace our true identity, that we are love personified and as such we are whole and complete just as we are.”

From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.

“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

For me this Lesson comes down to one question, regardless of what I’m experiencing: do I want to live in darkness—what I experience as fear—or in light—what I experience as peace? The answer seems obvious, yet whenever I forfeit mindfulness, the automatic choice is some form of fear.

Today I had another opportunity to practice choosing peace during an errand an hour’s drive away. Normally when I drive, I become tense around other drivers. I know this to be the ego mind’s doing. It sends fearful thoughts like “watch out for that pick-up truck coming up behind you; he’s probably going to tailgate because you’re not going fast enough” or “that car is going to cut in front of you; you better speed up.” These thoughts put me in heightened alert mode—tensing my body.

To override them, my routine today was to notice the tension in my body, pause my thoughts, take a breath, and recite this mantra: I choose power—which, for me, is the same as choosing light. That mantra may seem counterintuitive, yet each time I said it, the tension in my neck, shoulders, and stomach immediately relaxed, allowing me to take an even deeper breath. For a little while I’d return to peace.

A little backstory on the “power” mantra. Back in the 90s, I regularly visited my favorite chiropractor and spiritual teacher. Sadly, I can’t remember his name. For this story, I’ll call him Doc. While he did the usual adjustments, he also gave guidance on whatever emotional issues I was having.

During one session I shared my struggles with a challenging coworker who had an amazing talent for knowing which buttons to press to trigger my anger and frustration. Doc said, “You’re giving your power away every time she presses your buttons. There’s nothing you can do to change her, but there is something you can do to change your response.” That’s when he shared the “I choose power” mantra. He said, “It’s not about overpowering anyone or having to be a bully or tough. This is about tapping into your own inner power.” It seemed simple enough, though I had my doubts about it working.

The following week, the coworker called me about a problem she was having with a program I had written. As usual she said, “It’s not working,” without giving me any details. On my two-minute walk to her office, I kept repeating “I choose power. I choose power. I choose power.” When I arrived, I kindly asked her to explain the problem. As she showed me what she was trying to do, I noticed something strange: instead of being agitated with her as usual, I was surprisingly calm. I listened with an observer mind instead of my normal irritated ego mind. It took less than five minutes to find the solution. I showed her what she needed to do, she happily thanked me, and I walked out of her office totally amazed by how well that went. Two weeks later I was assigned to a different project and never had to work with her again.

Back to today’s driving. I must have repeated that mantra at least 20 times. What interested me was that I caught the tension—and then the ego thoughts—sooner and sooner. Eventually, as soon as another car came into view, I said the mantra, not even allowing enough time for one of the ego mind’s dark thoughts.

Instead of darkness, I chose light today—again and again.
