Lesson 305 ”There is a peace that Christ bestows on us.”

Reframe: I embrace the inner peace that is always available to me.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
Once in the morning and once in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“Father, the peace of Christ is given us, because it is Your Will that we be saved. ²Help us today but to accept Your gift, and judge it not. ³For it has come to us to save us from our judgment on ourselves.” (ACIM, W-305.2:1-3)

OR… “I choose true peace.”

For Lessons 301-310: What is the second coming? is the theme for the next 10 days. Read the whole article here.
”Christ’s Second Coming, which is sure as God, is merely the correction of mistakes, and the return of sanity. ²It is a part of the condition that restores the never lost, and re-establishes what is forever and forever true. ³It is the invitation to God’s Word to take illusion’s place; the willingness to let forgiveness rest upon all things without exception and without reserve.” (ACIM, W-pII.9.1:1-3).

OR put another way…

”It’s when we fully embrace our true identity, that we are love personified and as such we are whole and complete just as we are.”

From the PART II Introduction: Read the whole introduction here.

“Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

“… the world departs in silence as this peace envelops it, and gently carries it to truth, no more to be the home of fear.” (ACIM, W-305.1:3)

I’ve known for a while that peace is an inside job. I can visit all the peaceful places I enjoy—our downtown park, the Oregon coast, even my backyard—and still not feel the peace of Christ this Lesson describes. For 18 months, I went to our downtown park each week for an hour-long peace vigil. I experienced fleeting moments of peace, only to be disturbed by leaf blowers, sirens, and, occasionally, a train horn as a train made its way through town.

Honestly, though, my ego mind disturbed me more. It offered thoughts like: after this, let’s go to the grocery store; dogs aren’t allowed in the park, so why is this guy walking his dog here?; how did that hula hoop get caught so high up in that tree? When I caught myself thinking these things, I would then judge myself for failing to be peaceful at a peace vigil. I realized then that it wasn’t the sirens or the leaf blowers that were the problem, but my judgment of them.

Lately, though, I’ve adopted two routines that have helped me experience, if only for moments at a time, the deep, quiet peace God has given us—the peace this Lesson calls the peace of Christ. One involves noticing when my body becomes tense. When it does, I pause, take a deep breath, and recite the mantra “I choose power.” By power, I mean my inner power, which I understand as my direct connection to Divine Mind. For the other routine, I set a timer for 30 minutes throughout the day to remind me to pause, take a deep breath, and recite the mantra “slow down.” This helps bring me into the present moment, where I can consciously choose Divine Mind over ego mind.

In both cases, I can feel myself pulling away from the ego mind’s fearful, judgmental thoughts and aligning with peaceful thoughts. When I make that connection, my whole body relaxes and my thoughts slow to almost nothing. I can think and see more clearly. From this peaceful state, I stop judging everything and everyone around me, including myself.

The Course doesn’t teach these routines; I created them as tools to hep remove my blocks to peace. The Course teaches that all we need to do to experience the peace of Christ is change our minds—to enter what it calls the holy instant. That means choosing to see with Christ’s vision. I’m not fully there yet, which is why I created these routines. I think of them as training wheels on a bicycle. Eventually, I won’t need them.

As I think about today’s message, I long for the peace this Lesson teaches has already been bestowed upon us. I will continue to use my tools, create new ones if necessary, and keep practicing the Lessons.
