Artist Brian Dettmer carved out details in a set of encyclopedias and put them all together to form this delightful mandala-like piece of art. What would otherwise be an outdated set of books now becomes a visual merry-go-round of images that flash before us, giving us the world in pictures instead of words.

158 – Tomaselli Mandala
I first learned of collage/painter Fred Tomaselli while at our local library. Spotting a mandala image on the cover of a large art book entitled “Fred Tomaselli” caught my eye. I checked it out and checked it out. His art is vibrant and powerful…and so different from anything I had seen before. He uses a variety of traditional art media along with conventional materials…like photos, vegetation and even pills.
135 – Hub Mandala
Artist Virginia Fleck created this mandala masterpiece with two things: plastic bags and tape. Normally we would just toss these bags into the trash; Virginia, on the other hand, saw their potential and created a whole series of plastic bag mandalas.
114 – Sea Glass Mandala
When I first spotted Jonathan Fuller’s art, I thought he used paper to create it. Upon closer inspection I realized that he uses sea glass he collects along the coastline of Cornwall in the UK where he lives.
100 – Geometry of Humans Mandala
For MotD number 100, I wanted to showcase something special…important. When I found this image, I knew I had the perfect one for today.
It represents the geometry of a cross section of human DNA…that stuff of which we humans are made. While the science behind this image is fascinating, for the purposes of today’s post, I want to focus on the art and beauty of it.
99 – Leaves & Stones Mandala
When I see images of nature-inspired mandalas, it takes my breath away. The little kid voice in me says “I wanna do that!”
And that was my reaction yet again when I found today’s MotD from photographer & land artist, Dietmar Voorwold, and his remarkable land art creations. My biggest challenge was figuring out which of his pieces to showcase…they all are spectacular.
64 – Buttons and Things Mandala
At first glance this may seem like an odd choice for the Mandala of the Day. However upon closer inspection you’ll notice why I chose it. Jane Perkins, an artist in found things (her words), re-created Vermeer’s most beautiful painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, into this stunning piece of art using mostly round buttons and other round found items.
