Lesson 108: ”To give and to receive are one in truth.”

AI Reframe: What I offer, I experience.

Suggested Exercise:
For the first five minutes of each hour—or whenever feasible—”we will attempt to offer peace to everyone, and see how quickly peace returns to us.” Begin by saying:

To give and receive are one in truth.
I will receive what I am giving now.

Then close your eyes, and for five minutes think of what you would hold out to everyone, to have it yours. You might, for instance, say:

To everyone I offer quietness.
To everyone I offer peace of mind.
To everyone I offer gentleness.

Say each one slowly and then pause a while, expecting to receive the gift you gave. ²And it will come to you in the amount in which you gave it. ³You will find you have exact return, for that is what you asked. ⁴It might be helpful, too, to think of one to whom to give your gifts. ⁵[They] represent the others, and through [that one] you give to all.” (ACIM, W-108.8:4–9:5)

Message

Earlier today, before doing any of the practices, I sat with the idea that giving and receiving are one in truth. From The Course’s perspective, this seems to operate at the thought level.

For example, if I direct anger at someone, I’m not only giving that anger to them—I’m also receiving it myself. What are the odds I’d feel peace while giving anger?

During the first practice—offering quietness, peace, gentleness—I found that within seconds of giving each, I received it. The lesson says the results won’t be missed, and that the degree we give is the degree we receive. I found both statements amazingly true. It felt like a scientific experiment: playing with different variables and getting consistent results.

It’s simple and profound. For me, this reinforces how important it is to monitor my thoughts and what I’m offering. If I’m spiraling or triggered, I need to stop and offer peace so I can receive it. Or better yet, avoid the trigger entirely by offering peace, love, and joy as often as possible.

The lesson says giving and receiving are one in truth, not just reciprocal. I’m not fully there yet, but today’s practice showed me the cause-and-effect level clearly. That’s enough for now.
