Lesson 109: ”I rest in God.”

AI Reframe: I rest in trust and presence.

Suggested Exercise:
For the first five minutes of each hour—or whenever feasible—“We ask for rest today, and quietness unshaken by the world’s appearances. ²We ask for peace and stillness, in the midst of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams. ³We ask for safety and for happiness, although we seem to look on danger and on sorrow. ⁴And we have the thought that will answer our asking with what we request.” (ACIM, W-109.1:1-4)

Each hour that you take your rest today, a tired mind is suddenly made glad, a bird with broken wings begins to sing, a stream long dry begins to flow again. ²The world is born again each time you rest, and hourly remember that you came to bring the peace of God* into the world, that it might take its rest along with you.”(ACIM, W-109.6:1-2)

Message

I live in a state of constant hyper-vigilance. Always on edge. Always scanning for threats to my safety. Intellectually, I know why—childhood PTSD. But I rarely feel safe unless I consciously bring myself back to center, and that relief is usually short-lived. My body gives me clues: tightened stomach, elevated shoulders, clenched jaw.

Today’s lesson feels like an oasis. A place where we can experience a day of peace. I haven’t even done one practice period yet, and I already sense how wonderful this will feel. Like I’ve been on a treadmill for decades and just got permission to turn it off and step off.

Just reading the first two paragraphs calms me:

We ask for rest today, and quietness unshaken by the world’s appearances. ²We ask for peace and stillness, in the midst of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams. ³We ask for safety and for happiness, although we seem to look on danger and on sorrow. ⁴And we have the thought that will answer our asking with what we request.

“I rest in God*.” ²This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek. ³“I rest in God*.” ⁴This thought has power to wake the sleeping truth in you, whose vision sees beyond appearances to that same truth in everyone and everything there is. ⁵Here is the end of suffering for all the world, and everyone who ever came and yet will come to linger for a while. ⁶Here is the thought in which the Son of God is born again, to recognize himself.” (ACIM, W-109.1:1–2:6)

Then I tried the first practice. Almost immediately, I felt physical and emotional relief. Unlike meditation, where you watch your breath to quiet the mind, this felt more dynamic. Instead of focusing on something, I was releasing whatever turmoil arose and handing it over to the Divine.

Throughout the day, when I noticed my physical clues, I recited today’s idea. It did two things: broke up whatever ego-chaos I was in and brought me back to the present moment, where I could return to peace.

I also noticed that while the relief was still short-lived, the gap between recitations shortened. In other words, I’m getting better at putting today’s lesson into practice by becoming more aware of my body’s clues. That’s a big win in my book.

* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message.

“While I’m not a [Bible] verse reciter, I gotta admit, ‘I can do all things through that which strengtheneth me’ is worth adding to my brain’s portfolio.”
